Terminated gay catholic educator hired as Mercer Island associate principal

Mark Zmuda was fired from his position at Eastside Catholic HS in December of 2013 for marrying the man he loves. Students, parents and alumni rallied for Zmuda but the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle refused to reverse the firing. Zmuda has pending litigation against for the wrongful termination and discrimination. The Mercer Island School District has now announced that Zmuda will now be the associate principal at Mercer Island HS as well as their athletic director. His position will be made official July 1, 2014.

The Mercer Island Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano will recommend that Zmuda is confirmed as associate principal. According to a release from the district, Zmuda was chosen from more than 60 applicants for the position. "Mark impressed me with his knowledge of best-instructional practices, his integrity and work ethic and his commitment to the success of all students," Dr. Plano said in a release.

Mercer Island HS has gained an incredible educator. It is sad that it has to be at the expense of the students at Eastside Catholic HS.
