More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.

#SpiritDay: 19 Days of Action – Day 8, October 8
Thanks for taking the Spirit Day pledge to go purple in a stand against bullying and helping us bring Spirit Day to even more people by telling your friends why you're going purple on 10/19. Does your school have a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance)? You should ask your school administrators and find out. If not, you can learn more about starting a GSA at GLSEN’s website, which offers students everything they need to start a GSA at their school. Allies can also dowload or purchase GLSEN's "Safe Space Kit," which provides concrete strategies for supporting LGBT students.
Then, check out the GSA Network, a group that connects Gay-Straight Alliances from all across the nation to each other and to community resources. GSA Network's "Make It Better Project" connects LGBT and allied youth all over the country to resources, ideas, and each other in an effort to make schools safer for LGBT students.
If you’re out of school already, you can also connect with both GLSEN and the GSA Network to learn how you can help support a local GSA!
When you text PURPLE to 80888, you are supporting the important work GLAAD, GLSEN and The Trevor Project do every day to end bullying and support LGBT youth!
Be sure to check www.glaad.org/spiritday tomorrow for more easy ways you can take part in Spirit Day and help take a stand against bullying! You can also download the “Go Purple for #SpiritDay powered by Toyota Financial Services” apps for iPhone and Android. The app provides users with anti-bullying resources, calls to action, and a tool that can turn photos purple and share to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The free app is now available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.
