George Takei, Jennifer Tyrrell and GLAAD take a stand against Scouts’ policy at LGBT Pride in NYC
TV icon and former Boy Scout George Takei joined Ohio mom Jennifer Tyrrell and GLAAD at the 43rd Annual LGBT Pride March in New York City recently in a stand against the Boy Scouts of America’s policy banning gay scouts and LGBT leaders. Tyrrell’s Change.org petition calling on the BSA to end its long history of discrimination has garnered over 300,000 signatures. Read more.
GLAAD, advocates and organizations join together in historic march to end ‘Stop and Frisk’
GLAAD marched in the End Stop and Frisk: Silent March to End Racial Profiling alongside LGBT advocates, faith leaders and civil rights leaders including organizers, NAACP, National Action Network and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. GLAAD also worked with Organizer and Campaign Staff for Streetwise & Safe (SAS), Chris Bilal, to tell his story to CNN and The New York Times about his own experience with stop and frisk and its major impacts on LGBT youth of color in New York. GLAAD hosts panel at 37th Annual NABJ Convention
GLAAD, in partnership with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) LGBT Taskforce, hosted a panel to discuss ways in which LGBT journalists can be advocates for inclusive stories in their newsroom while maintaining their journalistic integrity. Panelists included CNN and ESPN Columnist LZ Granderson, Ebony.com Editorial Director and 2012 GLAAD Outstanding Magazine Article Award nominee Kierna Mayo, LGBT advocate and blogger Kenyon Farrow, and Black Enterprise writer and recipient of GLAAD’s 2012 Outstanding Magazine Article Award Carolyn Brown. Chicago Pride, media features LGBT-affirming faith leaders
GLAAD worked with local media to feature the stories of LGBT-affirming faith leaders in the Chicago area, several of whom participated in and even led the LGBT Pride March in the Windy City. Read more.
Speaking out against transphobia
GLAAD worked with writers at Loop 21 and award-winning blogger and founder of TransGriot, Monica Reports, to publish an Op-Ed in response to the harsh criticisms and transphobic remarks made against Joseline Hernandez of the VH1 show, Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Read more.
