A Real Life Family Living 'the New Normal': Jennifer Tyrrell and Alicia Burns, Get a First Look at their NOH8 Pictures Here

Recently Jennifer Tyrrell and her family lent their support to the NOH8 campaign, a photographic silent protest started by Adam Bouska and his partner in response to the Proposition 8 amendment on the California constitution, preventing marriage equality in the state.  She gave GLAAD a first look at the photo shoot, which was led by Intuitive Capturing Studios .

Jennifer Tyrrell and Alicia Burns are just one example of millions of real life families in the U.S. who demonstrate that same-sex parents are raising their families with the same love and compassion as straight parents.  Audiences last night got to see another gay couple, Bryan and David, who are trying to start a family with the help of a surrogate on NBC’s The New Normal which will air a second episode tonight.

Jennifer and Alicia are raising their four children in Bridgeport, Ohio.  One of their sons, seven year-old Cruz, asked his mothers to join the Boy Scouts of America. After some hesitation, the couple signed him up and soon Jennifer was asked to be a den mother.  Unfortunately after officials learned that Jennifer is gay, she was removed from her volunteer position.

Soon after Jennifer was removed from her position, the family took the stage at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles to share their story.  “We are moms and we’re Americans.  My son and the other boys in the pack are becoming leaders and that has nothing to do with my sexual orientation,” Jennifer told the audience.

Since then, the family has been working with GLAAD to tell their story and ask the Boys Scouts of America to change their policy.  They have delivered the signatures of over 300,000 people to the BSA headquarters and were joined by many celebrities in asking the boy scouts to end the unfair ban.

The New Normal airs tonight, Tuesday, September 11 at 9:30/8:30c on NBC. GLAAD will be partnering with Equality Utah and Utah Pride Center to host a panel discussion and screening for Utah residents following Salt Lake City’s NBC affiliate KSL-TV’s decision to not air the series.
