Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries (ELM) expands ministry opportunities for publicly-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to lead in the Lutheran church as ordained pastors and rostered lay leaders. They believe that supporting ministry by LGBT leaders will change the church, and thereby, transform society to become more fully inclusive of all people.
Within Christian traditions, liturgy is a pattern for worship used (whether recommended or prescribed) by a Christian congregation or denomination on a regular basis. Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Anglican, Reformed/Presbyterian, United Methodist, and Lutheran traditions have the “Eucharist” as a rite. Other Protestant traditions rarely use this exact term, preferring either "Communion", "the Lord's Supper", or "the Breaking of Bread.”

Members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) showed their support for LGBT equality in an overwhelming vote to oppose the amendment.
