NBC Sitcom Whitney to Feature Major Coming Out Storyline on Tonight's Episode

One of the main characters of the sitcom Whitney will come out on tonight’s episode entitled "The G Word," making him the third regular LGBT character currently on NBC.

Whitney is the brainchild of creator and star Whitney Cummings, and focuses on group of thirty-something friends at various stages of their relationships.  Several episodes ago, the character of Neal  (Maulik Pancholy) broke off his engagement to Lily (Zoe Lister Jones), and in tonight’s episode we see him anxiously come out to his friends and loved ones with ultimately positive results.

Following the cancellation of The Playboy Club, NBC currently only features two other regular out characters (Oscar on The Office and Tom on Smash) making a Neal a welcome addition.   Pancholy has played gay and bisexual characters before, most notably as Jack’s assistant Jonathan on 30 Rock, and as drug dealer Sanjay on Weeds who came out late in the series.  With just 15% of regular LGBT characters on scripted broadcast programming being people of color, Dean will also be a much needed improvement to character diversity on television.

Whitney airs Wednesday nights at 8/7c on NBC.
