More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
Keeping an Eye on Manchester's San Diego Union Tribune
The San Diego Union Tribune has been sold to Doug Manchester, the outspoken anti-gay activist who donated about $125,000 to pass Proposition 8 in 2008. Mr. Manchester has numerous holdings, including Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego and the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.
Although it is discouraging to see a fine newspaper like the Union Tribune sold to an anti-gay activist, GLAAD hopes that Mr. Manchester will allow the paper to maintain its high level of journalistic integrity. It would be a shame if Mr. Manchester interfered with newsroom or editorial efforts to fairly and accurately report news to the people of San Diego.
GLAAD will be watching, and holding the paper responsible, if this change in ownership leads to any less fair, accurate or inclusive coverage of LGBT people or issues important to our community.
