Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards: A Look at the LGBT-inclusive Nominees

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced this Wednesday the nominees for the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards.  Among the nominees are many LGBT-inclusive shows, which feature some of the most prominent out characters and personalities in daytime television. The 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards will be telecast on Turner Broadcast Networks, HLN on June 16, 2013.

The NBC daily drama Days of Our Lives received a total of 17 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and nods for both Chandler Massey and Freddie Smith in Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for their portrayals of Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis respectively. The LGBT-inclusive CBS drama The Bold and the Beautiful, which last year featured the series' first LGBT storyline with Karen Spencer's coming out story and the introduction of her partner Danielle, also counts an Outstanding Drama Series nod as part of its 15 nominations. General Hospital took home a total of 19 nominations and is also up for Outstanding Drama Series. The daily drama recently added out nurse Felix DuBois.

On the talk show side, The Ellen DeGeneres Show picked up an impressive 10 nominations including one in the Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment category. Also nominated in this category is CBS' The Talk, executive produced by out co-host Sara Gilbert. The program received five nominations across all categories. Good Morning America, which features out anchor Sam Champion, and the Today Show with newly out correspondent Jenna Wolfe both grabbed nods for Outstanding Morning Program; Good Morning America received two total nominations. Out host Anderson Cooper is nominated in Outstanding Talk Show Host for his work on Anderson Live. Billy Eichner, out host of Funny or Die's Billy on the Street, is nominated in Outstanding Game Show Host.

MTV's I'm Positive, which featured a young man named Otis struggling with coming out to his family as HIV positive soon after coming out as gay, has been nominated in Outstanding Promotional Announcement – Institutional.

GLAAD congratulates all the nominees and thanks the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for recognizing LGBT-inclusive programs in daytime television.  The 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards will be telecast on Turner Broadcast Networks, HLN on June 16, 2013.
