Inspired by the British diver Tom Daley, a Brazilian diver Ian Matos came out as gay. Due to the increasing pressure he felt from hiding, Matos made the decision to speak up.

"From a young age, I knew I was gay, but it was here that I got to live my sexuality" As told to Out sports.

Although his friends recommended that he does not come out until the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro end, he decided that this was the right time. He joins other professional athletes who made the decision to publicly come out. Along with Tom Daley, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Jason Collins and Robbie Rogers, Matos promotes strengthening of the LGBT community in the world of sports.
