For their new spring 2014 campaign, Barneys New York has created something unique with a photo and story series centered around 17 different transgender people. The project, titled "Brothers, Sisters, Sons, and Daughters," isn't a traditional catalog, but will instead be a portfolio of photographs, words, and video capturing the individuals taking part in the campaign.
Barneys New York has partnered with the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and The LGBT Community Center (The Center) to bring these stories to light. On February 11, 10% of proceeds from Barneys' flagship stores and Barneys.com will be donated to the two organizations.
The models range in age from 17 to their early 30s and span a wide range of gender identities. Famed fashion photographer Bruce Weber photographed them alone, together, and with friends and family wearing designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Balenciaga, Lanvin, and Manolo Blahnik. The images will be accompanied by interviews compiled into first-person narratives and videos telling the models' stories, which are being collected by Patricia Bosworth, an author and contributing editor at Vanity Fair. The first few stories are available here, and you can see several other photographs from the series below.
