Singer-songwriter Jeffery Straker is wowing audiences across Canada with his piano-pop, neo-folk-inspired music from his latest and sixth album, Vagabond (October 2012). Produced by Canadian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Danny Michel, Vagabond debuted in the top 20 of the iTunes singer-songwriter charts, and continues to garner critical acclaim.
Originally from the small town of Saskatchewan, Canada, Straker was born to an organist mother, auctioneer father, and farmer grandparents. Starker trained classically on the piano, taking lessons at the University of Regina.
Recent career highlights for Straker include recording for CBC radio’s "Canada Live," a music video charting in the top 10 on Much More Music Canada,a 2012 tour in Africa, as well as a recent sold-out concert with the full Regina Symphony Orchestra. Currently on tour and very busy, Straker performs more than 100 concerts a year across Canada.
Also important to Straker is authenticity, which includes being open about his being gay. He recently shared his coming out story on thechangeblog.com saying, "If you’re a gay (but closeted) performer, I think you’re doing a disservice to yourself, and your audience. If you’re not willing to give your full self on stage (or at any workplace for that matter) people can sense it. It’s intangible but people feel it." That authenticity pays off, as the Chicago Tribune raved, “Rufus Wainwright, as well as k.d. lang are among the Canadians making essential and beautiful music. Add the name Jeffery Straker to that list.”
