This post is not about whether he should have said that, nor about whether that's even the actual truth. Rather, it's about reassuring his young fans that, if it was true, and if that had been his answer, he would have found love and support in each and every one of the communities with which he identifies.
Liz Carmouche is about to make sports history for two reasons. The mixed martial arts (MMA) star is about to become one of the first two women ever to participate in an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fight. She's also about to become one of the highest profile openly gay athletes in the world.
There have been so many of these lists in the previous weeks. I've read several on this topic alone, and the great thing is that they all agree that 2012 was a truly banner year - to use a sports metaphor - for the elevation of this conversation into the public consciousness.
