"The Faceoff" (You Can Play Project)
The legacy of the late Brendan Burke, a vocal advocate for equality in professional hockey, is carried on through this campaign to ensure LGBT athletes are provided with equal opportunity and are being judged solely on their talent, work ethic and passion for their sport. Brendan’s words, and the words of the You Can Play Project, are simply: “If you can play…you can play.” The video featured NHL players, Brendan’s brother and a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers Patrick Burke as well as his father Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke. The videos aired during NHL games and were accompanied with a PR campaign in sports and mainstream media that sparked a national dialogue about equality in sports.
