A Note from GLAAD President Jarrett T. Barrios
As many of you may know, I am the father of two sons, Javier and Nathaniel. For all the late nights, homework, and worries that parenting can bring, for me, raising my two boys has been so fulfilling and rewarding. It is why I have a special place in my heart for those couples who make the decision to pursue a family together, only to find that their options are limited if not insurmountable.

Leadership Council Helps Amplify Community Voices in Atlanta
GLAAD Leadership Councils continue to be the ambassadors of GLAAD’s work in their local communities. In cities like New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, South Florida, Washington D.C., and Atlanta, the councils work to increase the visibility of LGBT people and issues in their own neighborhoods.

USA Giving Trends and GLAAD
According to this year’s Giving USA report, the gold standard for philanthropic trends and information, total charitable giving in 2009 came in at $303.76 billion, which was only slightly down from 2008. Of that $300 billion, 75 percent, over $225 billion, came from individuals just like you. If you consider the economic environment over the past year, the small decline in giving acts as a testament to the spirit of individual people to continue to support what they believe in.
You Spoke & NBC Listened
In early July, GLAAD issued a Call to Action against NBC’s Today Show after producers refused to open the program’s Modern Wedding Contest to same-sex couples. Nearly 4,000 people joined GLAAD’s call and sent emails to NBC executives demanding that the network open the Today contest. Then, on July 7 Today Show Executive Producer Jim Bell requested a meeting with GLAAD to discuss our concerns. After that meeting, GLAAD proudly announced that NBC had agreed to change the rules of the contest to include gay & lesbian couples and extended the contest deadline by three days.
