The GLAAD Media Awards in Advertising recognize and honor advertising for its fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.
Eligibility Period: Projects submitted for the 1st GLAAD Media Awards in Advertising must have been broadcast, published, or appeared online between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.
Submission Deadline: Materials must be received in the Los Angeles GLAAD office by August 14, 2009 at 6 p.m. PT.
Must an ad be submitted in order to be nominated? GLAAD monitors advertising on a year-round basis as part of our Advertising Media Program. This monitoring provides a pool of potential nominees for the volunteer Jury to review. The volunteer Jury may choose to nominate ads with LGBT content- even if the ad is not submitted.
How to submit: Because supporting materials must be submitted for each entry, you may NOT submit entry forms online. You must print and mail this completed entry form with all supporting materials to the address given below. Download a PDF of this entry form. Please note that for each submission you must include a separate entry form and a $50 processing fee payable to GLAAD.
Nominees announced: Nominees will be announced on September 14, 2009.
Award Recipients announced: Award recipients will be announced at the 1st GLAAD Media Awards in Advertising event on October 27, 2009.
Criteria: GLAAD will only consider advertising entries that include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) images or address issues that affect our community. Criteria for evaluating entries are:
1) the fairness, accuracy and inclusiveness of the LGBT representations 2) the boldness and originality of the content 3) the impact of the ad 4) the overall quality of the ad
Categories: Historically, the GLAAD Media Awards had two categories for advertising - Print & Electronic. The nominees in those two categories for the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced in January 2009. The award recipients in these two categories will be announced at our first GLAAD Media Awards in Advertising event this fall. However, going forward, those two categories will be retired and new categories more specific to the advertising industry will be created.
Please note that GLAAD will make the final determination regarding eligibility and the appropriate category for each entry.
TV Campaign - Mainstream Market Given to a television advertisement appearing on a mainstream media outlet which features gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people in the ad or addresses LGBT issues. Promo spots for the network may be considered. Public Service Announcements are not eligible in this category. Receives Award: Award is given to the advertisement. Corporate representative, ad agency representative, and/or people featured in the ad may accept.
TV Campaign - LGBT Market Given to a television advertisement appearing on a media outlet airing only LGBT-specific content which features gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people in the ad or addresses LGBT issues. Promo spots for the network may be considered. Public Service Announcements are not eligible in this category. Receives Award: Award is given to the advertisement. Corporate representative, ad agency representative, and/or people featured in the ad may accept.
Print/Outdoor Campaign - Mainstream Market Given to a print, billboard or poster advertisement appearing in a mainstream media outlet or space which features gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people in the ad or addresses LGBT issues. All Outdoor entries must be designed for standard or existing poster sites e.g. billboard, bus shelter, point of purchase, etc. Receives Award: Award is given to the advertisement. Corporate representative, ad agency representative, and/or people featured in the ad may accept.
Print/Outdoor Campaign - LGBT Market Given to a print, billboard or poster advertisement appearing in an LGBT-specific media outlet or space which features gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people in the ad or addresses LGBT issues.
