A combination of editor, project manager, writer and communications strategist, the Editorial & Special Projects Manager works with the Director of Messaging and the Director of Public Relations to ensure that all external communication from GLAAD is consistent with organizational messaging standards and practices. The Editorial & Special Projects Manager also supervises long- and short-term projects that relate to building internal capacity and strengthening organizational infrastructure for GLAAD’s Media Programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Reviews, edits and approves all external communication distributed to media, GLAAD membership, and GLAAD’s Web sites and blog, including: statements, press releases, action alerts, publications, reports, op-eds, training materials, news items and blog posts. Enforces consistency with the organization’s mission, brand and messaging standards.
  • Reviews, edits and approves a broad range of time-sensitive content, including response to breaking news stories and blog posts written by staff, fellows and interns. Manages posting to GLAAD’s Web sites and blog, as well as distribution to email lists as appropriate.
  • Identifies opportunities for GLAAD response to breaking news and action items.
  • Oversees creation of toolkits and resource guides for diverse audiences, including journalists and community members.
  • Assists the Senior Director of Media Programs and other staff, as needed, in development of op-eds, media trainings, event scripts, campaign materials, and presentations for conferences and meetings.
  • Develops material about GLAAD’s programs and activities for presentations to media outlets, donors and corporate sponsors, and special events.
  • As needed, supervises and coordinates organizational media monitoring activities.
  • Supervises and mentors fellows and interns, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Required: Minimum four years’ experience working in editorial management capacity in non-profit, legal or media sectors.
  • Required: Degree and/or substantial experience in journalism, communications, political science or public relations or equivalent level of work experience
  • Required: Excellent writing skills and demonstrated experience writing statements, press releases, op-eds, talking points, news summaries, speeches, presentations and other forms of external written communication on tight deadlines.
  • Required Excellent editing/copyediting skills. Demonstrated ability to rigorously and effectively promote and enforce factual and technical accuracy standards at all levels of an organization. Experience implementing systems designed to promote consistency and continuity of message.
  • Required: Excellent research and analysis skills.
  • Required: In-depth knowledge of mainstream, LGBT and digital media, and experience with communicating with varied media audiences.
  • Required: Proven track record of independent project management and ability to keep multiple complex projects with varying deadlines on track.
  • Required: Proven track record of leadership skills within prior work experience.
  • Required: Comfort working with databases and blog and web platforms.
  • Preferred: Minimum four years’ experience managing volunteers, interns and staff.
  • Preferred: Experience analyzing research and data to determine best practices for messaging and communications strategy.
  • Preferred: Public speaking experience, including ability to deliver presentations, skills-building trainings and media interviews.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required in response to breaking news or time-sensitive developments around LGBT issues.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of LGBT political, cultural and social organizations.
  • Strong working knowledge of issues regarding LGBT advancement or demonstrated capacity to understand issues quickly and competently.
  • Experience working and organizing effectively within diverse communities (i.e. race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity)
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines and desire to be a self-starter.

Supervision
The Editorial & Special Projects Manager has a dual reporting relationship to the Director of Messaging and the Senior Director of Media Programs. The position does not have any direct full-time employees but does supervise volunteers, interns and/or fellows as required.

Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience.
