UPDATE, JUNE 11, 2011: Tina Fey and NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt have spoken out against anti-gay violence and GLAAD has called on Tracy Morgan to speak out and meet with families who have lost loved ones to anti-LGBT violence.
June 10, 2011: GLAAD is looking into allegations that actor/comedian Tracy Morgan went on what's been described as a homophobic rant during a performance this week. Kevin Rogers attended the show with his partner and a friend, according to a press release from the "ex-gay" watchdog group Truth Wins Out. Rogers said Morgan’s persona changed as he allegedly claimed that being gay is a choice, that being gay is something that kids learn from the media, and that gay youth victims of bullying are simply 'whining.'" Rogers posted a firsthand account of the incident on his facebook page, parts of which are quite disturbing.
He said if his son that was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N (one word I refuse to use) to death"
The sad thing is that none of this rant was a joke. His entire demeanor changed during that portion of the night. He was truly filled with some hate towards us. As far as I could see 10 to 15 people walked out. I had to fight myself to stay seated, but I knew if I got up... he won.
We've spoken to Rogers via email, and we have been trying to confirm his account of the performance, either through other members of the audience that night, or through Morgan himself. We've reached out to Morgan's management, as has Truth Wins Out, and have not yet heard from them.
"Tracy Morgan's management needs to investigate these allegations and should they prove true, we call on him to remove these violently anti-gay remarks from his show and send a strong message that anti-gay violence is not something to joke about," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.
