Snapshots of Our Work
Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?
Be sure to check out GLAAD Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT equality through news, entertainment and online media.
GLAAD currently has staff on the ground in Oregon to support Basic Rights Oregon, which recently launched statewide television commercials as part of its “Marriage Matters” public education campaign to engage Oregonians on the topic of marriage for gay and lesbian couples. This campaign comes at a crucial time, as the general election in 2012 could bring marriage equality to Oregon if voters repeal an anti-gay constitutional amendment adopted in 2004. A commercial entitled “Love and Marriage” features Shelly and Kristin Casteel, a Portland couple who received media training from GLAAD in preparation for the widespread media coverage on this issue (including articles in the East Oregonian, Just Out, and Pam’s House Blend).
Last week GLAAD sat down with Damian Furtch, the 26-year old who was violently attacked on March 27 in front of a McDonald’s in the West Village. Damian shared his story of what happened in order to shed light on the issue of anti-LGBT violence and to help prevent this kind of attack from happening again. GLAAD provided Damian with media training and is helping to garner media attention on the issue of anti-LGBT violence.
GLAAD congratulates TeenNick and Degrassi for recently winning a George Foster Peabody Award, which recognizes “distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by TV and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals and the World Wide Web.” Degrassi was honored this year for its storyline about Adam, a transgender teen who is outed at school and who struggles to find full acceptance at home. GLAAD provided script notes on the two-part Degrassi story entitled “My Body is a Cage” and assisted with marketing materials for the storyline as well as a PSA raising awareness around transgender issues and resources available through PFLAG.
