Video: Russell Simmons Accepts the Excellence in Media Award at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York
This Saturday, the Reverend Al Sharpton presented hip hop legend Russell Simmons with the Excellence in Media Award at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York. The award is presented to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.
In addition to being one of the founders of the hip hop label Def Jam Recordings, Simmons is an entrepreneur and a philanthropist who has voiced his support for the LGBT community on such issues as marriage equality and repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

The GLAAD Media Awards series will continue in Los Angeles on April 10, 2011, where GLAAD will honor Broadway legend Kristin Chenoweth with the Vanguard Award and NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, among several others.

The final ceremony will take place in San Francisco on May 14, 2011, at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis.
