Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?
Be sure to check out GLAAD Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT equality through news, entertainment and online media!
Last week, GLAAD staff were on hand in Minneapolis at the 23rd Annual National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change. On Thursday, GLAAD held the New Media Training Institute, which was a day-long session that taught attendees about digital tools and social media and how those tools could be used in advocacy work. The following day, Senior Media Field Strategist Daryl Hannah presented organization leaders with tools to help them become even more effective spokespeople for their organizations in interviews with high-profile media outlets. Media Field Strategist Justin Ward also led a session that aims to build stronger connections between faith communities and secular organizations.
GLAAD also took NBC’s Saturday Night Live to task after the show featured an egregiously transphbobic skit that degraded the lives and experiences of transgender women everywhere. Nearly 4,000 people have joined GLAAD’s Call and have sent emails to NBC executives to demand that the network apologize and remove the skit from future airings.
GLAAD’s Religion, Faith & Values team worked with LGBT faith leaders to respond to the murder of David Kato, a leading LGBT human rights advocate in Uganda. A news release prepared by GLAAD and the UN Faith Coalition for Human Rights was published by Religion News Service and resulted in coverage of a protest outside the National Prayer Breakfast and was picked up by USA Today (Faith & Reason blog) and The Huffington Post.
GLAAD also worked with leaders from the National Religious Leaders Roundtable and Taskforce staff to amplify the voices of LGBT faith leaders who continue to fight the exportation of so-called “ex-gay ministries” that spread fear in the name of religion and foment persecution.
