GLAAD hosts a series of educational panels at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival

Last week, GLAAD was at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah where we hosted three panel discussions about LGBT images in film. Topics included: Generation in Crisis - LGBT Youth in Film and the Media, Co-hosted by the SAG LGBT Actors Committee; TRANS-Lucent - The Ongoing Evolution of Transgender Images in Film; and The E-Cinema Migration: Is the Internet Reshaping Film? Through these panels, GLAAD brought important LGBT-inclusive films to hundreds of filmmakers, media and film industry professionals.

Back in New York, GLAAD’s National News team assisted ABC News with an article about the upcoming documentary, “Becoming Chaz,” which chronicles Chaz Bono’s transition from female to male. GLAAD helped ABC with transgender terminology and worked with reporters to ensure that the article fairly and accurately represented Chaz and his story.

Later in the week, one of GLAAD’s Twitter followers alerted us to a grocery store in Arkansas that had put a censor shield over a magazine featuring a photo of Elton John, David Furnish and their newborn baby on its cover. GLAAD quickly took action and phoned both the grocery store and the company’s headquarters to ask that the censor shield be removed. Just hours after our call, the company released an official statement apologizing for the incident and removed the shields.

In Los Angeles, GLAAD’s Spanish-Language Media team was alerted to a problematic poll on Univision.com which asked visitors, “Is it appropriate for a bishop to call gay people ‘fa**ots’?” We explained to Univision the inappropriateness of ever asking if a pejorative is appropriate, and the news website quickly removed the poll.
