What to Watch: This Weekend (Jan 28-30)

Spartacus and Portlandia return Friday night with new schemes brewing on both shows, and the SAG Awards air on Sunday followed by brand new episodes of Big Love, Episodes and Shameless!

What to Watch: Friday, 28

9:00pm: Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star, OWN (1 hr) NEW
Carson Kressley and Nancy O'Dell host Oprah’s challenge where ten competitors battle for their own show on OWN.  One of the contestants is Ryan O’ Connor, who wants to be the country’s “gay best friend” and proposes a talk show-variety show hybrid.

10:00pm: Spartacus: Gods of the Arena , Starz (1 hr) NEW
Batiatus conjures up a devious scheme and enlists Lucretia, Gaia, and a clutch of gladiator recruits to see it through.  Tune in to see how both the relationships between Lucretia & Gaia and Barca & Auctus flourish this week.

10:30pm: Portlandia, IFC (30 min) NEW
The Mayor of Portland (played by Kyle Maclachlan) has assigned a musical project to the duo in this week’s episode “A Song For Portland, brought to you by SNL’s Fred Armisen and bisexual musician turned sketch comedienne Carrie Brownstein.

This week, Graham’s guests include comedians Vince Vaughn and Sarah Millican, plus a performance by Diddy-Dirty Money.

Sunday, January 23
5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST: Screen Actors Guild Awards, TBS & TNT (90 min)
SAG Award nominees this year include the LGBT-inclusive film and television shows The Kids Are All Right, Modern Family, and Glee, for which out actors Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch are individually nominated for Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series.  Watch to see who takes home the trophies!

9:00pm: Big Love, HBO (1 hr) NEW
This week, Lura takes drastic measures in response to her husband Alby’s zealous efforts to "purify" the compound.  Considering that her past drastic measures include trying to murder Roman and revealing Alby and Dale’s affair (which led Dale to hang himself), this episode is sure to be chockfull of drama.

9:30pm: Episodes, Showtime (30 min) NEW
Matt has convinced Sean to change Morning’s character to no longer be a lesbian, to Beverly’s utter vexation.  The trio also embarks on an impromptu road trip as they try to keep a drunk Matt away from the paparazzi.

10:00pm: Shameless, Showtime (1 hr) NEW
Lonely after “Aunt Ginger” left, pre-teen Debbie kidnaps a toddler from a birthday party.  And last week, Ian came out to Mandy, who is now acting as his beard.  Stay tuned to see how his fake relationship may interfere with his real relationship with Kash.
