More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
YOU DID IT! Arkansas School Board Member Clint McCance to Resign
Arkansas School Board Member Clint McCance will resign under pressure from the media and the LGBT community. According to CNN.com, McCance, who posted anti-gay rhetoric on his Facebook wall, said he would resign from the school board to spare the district the bad press and distractions of dealing with the fallout from his comments.
In a CNN Interview with Anderson Cooper, McCance said:
"I'm sorry I've hurt people with my comments. I'm sorry I made those ignorant comments and hurt people on a broad spectrum."
McCance further distanced himself from his comments saying:
"I would never support suicide for any kids. I don't support bullying of any kids.I'd like to extend apologies to those families that have lost children, for all those children who feel that suicide is the only way out, especially for the five families who have already lost children. I brought more hurt on them... they didn't deserve that and I do feel genuinely bad for them."
McCance’s hateful speech was made public by The Advocate, which obtained a screen grab of the post on Monday. By Thursday evening, nearly 65,000 people “liked” the Fire Clint McCance Facebook page posted by HRC, and nearly 15,000 people had signed on to a Change.org petition.
GLAAD thanks everyone who showed their support for the Arkansas LGBT community and will continue to monitor the situation.
