Kids who are targeted by anti-gay bullying have already been sent powerful messages of solidarity from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama. This week, the administration continued its message of support, through Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Sebelius already addressed the issue of bullying in an editorial she co-wrote with Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan, which appeared in the Houston Chronicle earlier this month. This week she released a video, speaking directly to young people who have been targeted by this behavior.
First Lady Michelle Obama echoed this sentiment, speaking with Ellen DeGeneres on Thursday.
Messages like these are necessary to let young people know that there are many people who love them, who care about them, and who want them to be safe and happy. We encourage the media to keep asking public figures about bullying, and to keep giving role models a chance to tell our nation's youth that it does, in fact, get better.
