Nearly one year ago, Mitrice Richardson, an African American lesbian then 24-years-old, was released from the Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station following questions about her inability to pay an $89.00 dinner tab at Geoffrey's, a restaurant in Malibu, California. Her cell phone confiscated and her car impounded, Richardson, whose mental state was questionable at the time, left the sheriff's station in the early morning hours of September 17, 2009 with nothing but the clothes on her back. Her family never saw or heared from her again.
On Thursday, August 13, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca confirmed that skeletal remains found Monday in Malibu Canyon were those of Mitrice Richardson. The sheriff's department said there was no sign of foul play, nor do they believe that Richardson fell to her death. Richardson's remains were discovered about 2 1/2 miles from the place investigators believe she was last seen.
GLAAD is saddened to learn of this tragic news and we send our heartfelt condolences to Mitrice's family and friends. As questions remain about the details of Richardson's mysterious death, GLAAD will continue to closely monitor the media coverage of this case.
