Sundance Winner Undertow (Contracorriente) to Screen at Outfest
GLAAD will collaborate with Outfest to present the 2010 Sundance World Cinema Audience Award winner, film maker Javier Fuentes-Leon’s “Undertow” (“Contracorriente”) on July 13. "Undertow" is one of the 147 films to be presented at the 28th annual Outfest, the Los Angeles gay and lesbian film festival taking place July 8 to July 18.
Set on the rocky shores of Peru’s coastline, “Undertow” tells the story of a husband and soon-to-be father, Miguel (Cristian Mercado) who struggles to keep separate but intact the family he cherishes and the affair he is having with solitary artist Santiago (Manolo Cardona). Miguel tries to have the best of both worlds until he has to risk everything in order to keep a promise made to Santiago.
The men’s playfulness and joy combined with a heartbreaking situation, plus the beautiful imagery of cave arches, rocky shorelines and crashing waves, as well as a touch of magical realism, all intertwine to make this a moving and memorable film. “Undertow" will be featured as the International Dramatic Centerpiece at Outfest on July 13.
Outfest will feature hundreds of films from 23 different countries, including Rodney Evans' Billy & Aaron and the popular Women’s Night films on Friday July 16. The event will also feature engaging panels, like Coming Out, a discussion on actors living openly featuring Meredith Baxter and special events to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the city of West Hollywood through multiple of films that celebrate its history and community.
Outfest’s July 8 Opening Night Gala will include Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Freidman’s debut narrative feature “Howl,” starring James Franco, Jon Hamm and David Strathairn and the presentation of the Outfest Lifetime Achievement Award to Jane Lynch, noted actress and star of Glee, this year’s GLAAD Media Award recipient for Outstanding Comedy Series. Fellow Glee actor Chris Colfer and director Paris Barclay will present Lynch with the award. The feature debut of writer and director J.B. Ghuman’s “Spork” will be the event’s Closing Night Gala.
Tickets for screenings and events can be purchased on the Outfest website, or call (213) 480-7065.
