GLAAD Hosts Screenings of The Fabulous Beekman Boys in LA and SF

Planet Green's The Fabulous Beekman Boys, a new series that follows a gay couple who leaves the big city for an organic farm in upstate New York, is set to premiere tomorrow, June 16 at 9:00 pm ET and GLAAD is co-hosting screenings Tuesday, June 15th in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The series features an odd couple--a straitlaced, former Vice President of Healthy Living for Martha Stewart Living Dr. Brent Ridge and his partner, drag queen turned best-selling author, Josh Kilmer-Purcell. The longtime partners stumbled across the Beekman farm on one of their annual apple-picking trips, and decided to buy it in order to transform the farm into an organic, sustainable food company. The series follows the couple as they try to build a business, but more importantly highlights the couple's unique relationship as they try to forge a life together outside of the big apple. Planet Green is a new channel from the Discovery Networks that features original programming for eco-friendly living. This groundbreaking series is the first to feature a real-life gay couple as they take on eco-friendly organic farming with the help of how-to guides on the internet. The series is intended to inspire and educate viewers of the complexities of organic farming. It also features the drama and complications that the couple faces in their endeavors. According to Fenton Bailey, the series producer, the series is unique from any other DIY series. "It feels aspirational. I think the problem with on-the-nose ecology programming is that it can feel like homework or it can feel like scolding."

The Beekman Boys expands the representation of gay men beyond the urban cityscape. Kilmer-Purcell, who often travels from the city to the farm in order to help launch their soap line says in the premiere, "I don't want to be Martha Stewart, Brent. I don't. I just want to have a good time." To celebrate this trailblazing series, GLAAD is inviting its volunteers and members to attend screenings in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
