Anti-LGBT activist George Alan Rekers admitted ties to a 20-year-old, gay escort last week after the Miami New Times revealed that the two men spent a 10-day European vacation together.
Rekers, however, claims that he hired the young man to “lift his luggage.”
According to the Miami New Times, Rekers enlisted his services by way of Rentboy.com – a sexually explicit website that connects users to male escorts.
The young man, who goes by the pseudonym ‘Lucien’, told CNN’s AC360 on Friday that he was required to give Rekers “sexual massages” while on the trip.
Rekers’ website disputes that claim, stating “Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant.”
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow lambasted Rekers on her Friday program, saying that “the reason George Rekers’ pitiful, closeted, hypocritical life news is actual news is because he’s quite actively engaged in trying to change this country to make it a more difficult place to be gay – particularly a more difficult place to be a young gay person, while he’s simultaneously hiring at least one gay person to not carry his baggage.”
Maddow goes on to point out that Rekers has been paid “tens of thousands of tax payer dollars” to defeat equal protection laws for gay and lesbian people across the country.
Maddow punctuates the segment by stating, “Being gay cannot be cured. Being a contemptible, pathetic, hypocrite can be cured. Come out, come out wherever you are.”
Meanwhile Equality Florida has issued a petition calling on Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum to apologize for paying Rekers over one hundred thousand tax payer dollars to testify as an "expert" witness against allowing gay and lesbian people to adopt children.
