More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
U.S. Census Bureau Asks LGBT People to Be Counted in New PSAs
New York City Council Speaker Christinie Quinn joined U.S. Census Bureau officals at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center in New York on Monday to unveil a new PSA campaign that specifically urges LGBT people to participate in the 2010 Census count.
Each of the six new videos feature a notable LGBT advocate touting the Bureau’s inclusive message, “Be yourself and be counted.”
Openly gay actor George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes) and his husband Brad Altman are among the advocates featured in the videos.
“This is the first time in history that the Census is counting marriages like ours,” says Altman. “So fill out the Census and let’s show America how many of us are joined in beautiful, loving marriages.”
GLAAD was front and center at today's press conference and hosted a live stream of the event on our website in conjunction with the U.S. Census Bureau. GLAAD also assisted in generating significant media attention around the new LGBT inclusive PSA campaign.
The PSAs will begin airing Monday, April 5 on LOGO.
