More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
Ricky Martin Comes Out
Today, beloved singer and performer extraordinaire Ricky Martin issued a
very personal announcement
that he is gay.
“At this moment I'm feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share...” says Martin on his website. “Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions...It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day.”
Media outlets around the world are buzzing with the news. In fact, Martin’s site has been flooded, with multiple periods of downtime since he posted his comments.
In response to Martin’s coming out, GLAAD's President Jarrett Barrios, also a father of two, issued the following statement:
"When someone like Ricky Martin comes out, hundreds of millions of people now have a cultural connection with an artist, a celebrity and, perhaps most importantly, a father who happens to be gay. His decision to model this kind of openness and honesty can lead to greater acceptance for countless gay people in U.S., in Latin America and worldwide."
Martin, a pop icon, stated that his decision to come out was due to his young twin sons, and that remaining in the closet "would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with."
