UPDATE: Georgia Parents Kick Gay Teen Out of the House over Prom Date
Wednesday, March 24, 2010 - 2:00pm by Seth Adam, GLAAD's Senior Manager of Communications
The parents of an openly gay Georgia teen have kicked him out of the house after he garnered media attention for planning to bring a same-sex date to prom, The Georgia Voice reported today.
Derrick Martin, 18, asked administrators at his rural Cochran, Georgia high school if he could bring his boyfriend to prom. Originally, Martin’s request was denied, but school officials changed their decision last week after a Mississippi lesbian sued her school district for its decision to bar her and her girlfriend from an April 2 prom event.
The Macon Telegraph reports that Martin is now staying with a friend.
