More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
The New and Improved COAD Blog!
My name is Kellee Terrell, GLAAD’s new Media Field Strategist with a focus on Communities of African Descent (COAD). In my role I will monitor the media and provide critical analysis about its coverage of stories, trends and news that affect the black LGBT community.
Since the black LGBT community is often underrepresented and misrepresented in the media and within society, there is a lot of work to be done to change hearts and minds about existing stereotypes while increasing community visibility. The COAD blog will not only highlight positive media coverage of the black LGBT community and our allies but also hopefully inspires people to take action against defamatory news stories, anti-gay rhetoric, hate crimes and violence.
So while, this blog will celebrate the good and call out the bad, we at GLAAD cannot do it all ourselves. We need your eyes and ears as well.
We need our community.
Do you know of a new film coming out? Hear something defamatory on the radio? Or read a great op-ed in your local newspaper? Tell me about it! You can also contact me if you or your organization is looking for media training or you are interested in learning more about the COAD program. Please e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to blogging and hearing from you!
