Attention NY film fans: Regent Releasing's powerful new documentary about safe sex pioneer Richard Berkowitz, Sex Positive, will be having its New York debut today.

Sex Positive

The film shines a light on Berkowitz, considered the unsung hero of the safe sex movement. At the height of the AIDS crisis in 1983, Berkowitz teamed with Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, a controversial virologist and AIDS doctor, and Michael Callan, a beloved activist and musician, to release a pamphlet entitled How to Have Sex in an Epidemic: One Approach. The pamphlet outlined for the first time safe sex practices and is believed to have coined the term "safe sex." Though Sonnabend and Callan went on to fame, Berkowitz was largely forgotten...until now.

Sex Positive will be showing in NY at The Quad Cinema on 13th Street before moving on to Denver's Starz FilmCenter and West Hollywood's Laemmle Sunset 5 on June 19. On July 3, the film has its San Francisco premiere at the Roxie Cinema.
