After the New York Film Critics Circle named Milk the Best Picture of 2008 (as well as singling out Sean Penn and Josh Brolin for their acting), the Golden Globes, whose nominations were announced today, only handed out one nomination to the film: a nod to Sean Penn, nominated for Best Actor - Drama. Now I'm not about to cry "homophobia!" on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. After all, the Globes have a history of being very kind to LGBT films. (Brokeback Mountain won that Best Picture award, remember?) But it is awfully surprising, given the momentum Milk has gained in the 2008 awards season. The Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards) threw eight nominations Milk's way, The International Press Academy (The Satellite Awards) awarded six nominations, and the Independent Spirit Awards gave Milk four noms. Obviously there are a lot of great films this year, with no clear frontrunner. And there are many more opportunities in this seemingly-endless awards cycle for Milk to garner even more nominations and ultimtately, more statuettes.
